Chapter 17

Stella kept running into roadblocks in her case. Didn’t help that she was still waiting to her back from Mike about the tox report and her background guy who was currently digging into facts about Jacob Aster that she could not access with her own credentials.

Instead of succumbing to the frustrating feelings inside of her, however, Stella decided to tackle another case to keep her sharp. No, not the “cheating wife” case that had fallen into her lap a couple days ago, but whatever the hell it was Jade continued to obsess over in her corner.

Jade wasn’t the type to obsess over anything. This was a woman who barely stuck through a book long enough to finish it. Sitting down to play a video game or binge-watch the latest season of The Crown? Yeah, right. The only time she got a little obsessive was when they were in bed, and Stella didn’t count that.

Yet something had been stealing Jade’s attention here and there for the past two weeks. As the days grew insufferably short and the Christmas commercials dominated the TV, Jade sequestered herself at the corner table of the apartment and flipped through the albums her father had sent home with her.

Was it normal for Jade to look through her mother’s possessions and consider what they might have meant to a woman who hadn’t been alive for decades? Obviously. Yet there was one album in particular Jade nosed through whenever Stella was busy or out of the house. Shouldn’t she be getting back to her physical therapy studies? They had been talking about Jade returning to training as recently as Halloween, but between the Maureen Aster case and Jade going back to Medford to pick things up from her father…

Yeah. Something was up.

“Tea?” Stella sidled up next to her girlfriend, a mug of tea in her hand. “Edible?” She produced a piece of special brownie in her other hand. “Powerful combination that will explode your mind?”

Jade waved off both, further proving that she was more interested in the contents of her mother’s album. Stella didn’t get it. They looked like pictures of her mother when she was much younger, possibly before Jade was born. They don’t look much alike. Jade’s mother didn’t look very ‘80s, either. She would have been more at home in the Summer of Love, with her long patterned skirts and hair that covered her shoulders and the tank tops wrapped around her torso. She always has a smile on her face, though. The man in a few of the pictures was vaguely familiar. Stella assumed it was Jade’s father, though what she remembered about the man suggested he wasn’t much of the muscle shirt and sports car type.

“What’s up?” Stella sat on the back of Jade’s armchair. She was two seconds away from running her fingers through Jade’s hair. “Your mom was really pretty.”

That was her in. Get her talking about her mom. Reveal more about the kind of woman she was. Something about this album puzzled Jade, and Det.
